| EXCELLENCE AWARD / Etienne Koman, President of the GESTOCI Excellence Award Jury

Etienne Koman, Président du jury du Prix d'Excellence de GESTOCI

The curtain fell on the ceremony to celebrate the winners of the GESTOCI 2019 Excellence Award. In this interview, the President of the said Prize jury, Etienne Koman, explains the choice of the winners. He goes back to the method of preselecting candidates, talks about the composition of the jury and the difficulties encountered. He also winks at the Managing Director of GESTOCI and the President of the Mutual who are the main players in this Prize.

Tell us about the winners of the 2019 edition. What made the difference between them and the other agents?

The best agents of the second edition of the GESTOCI Excellence Award are four in number. They stood out for their professional performance. What also made them strong is that they are very respectful, courteous, calm and socially integrated people. These four agents are present at most of the activities organized by GESTOCI and the Mutual of agents. For the 2019 edition, the scores were very tight, which means that the objectives assigned to this activity have been achieved.

In your opinion, what is the impact of this competition on GESTOCI workers?

GESTOCI agents work to give the best of themselves. They now know that those in charge follow them, observe them, notice them, evaluate them and reward them through this prize instituted by the Mutual.

How is the preselection of candidates carried out?

The Mutual of Agents of GESTOCI (MUTAGEST) first informs all the staff (by posting, by emails) of the launch of the edition, by defining the framework in which (the spirit and the letter) the selections will take place, as well as the areas of activity (Yamoussoukro depot, Abidjan-Vridi Petroleum Terminal (TPAV), Headquarters Administration and IT Security). Then, in agreement with the members of the jury, the Mutual reviews the selection criteria. The selected criteria are then communicated (by posting, by e-mail).
Finally, the actual pre-selection is made by the various line managers. Each line manager (Directors, Heads of Department and Heads of Service) proposes to the president of the jury, under cover of discretion, the names of the three best agents of his entity, according to the criteria communicated by MUTAGEST. This preselection is done without the agent's knowledge.

What if the jury is made aware of a leak about the identity of a proposed agent?

If the jury is informed, before the announcement of the results, that there has been a leak on the identity of a proposed agent, that agent is excluded from the rest of the process. If the leak is about the end result, we suggest canceling the edition to the president of the Mutual. Because we care about the integrity of the work and the reputation of the jury.

Are the winners of previous editions affected by the preselection?

Obviously. The best agents from previous editions are not excluded from this preselection. Who are the members of the jury? The members of the jury are unknown to the staff, the General Management and even the members of the MUTAGEST office. Before the first preselection stage, we listen, observe, interact with and exchange naturally with each other without attracting their attention. Nor is it about trying to spy on them; this is not the spirit of competition.

What does your job really consist of?

This is a task that I find quite noble, given the objectives and expected results. For us, members of the jury, within the framework drawn up by MUTAGEST, it is a question of presenting to all the staff those among them who have behaved well on the professional (achievement of the objectives set), social (life in community) and relational (attitude vis-à-vis employees, colleagues, management, customers, external service providers, etc.).

I take this opportunity to thank all the leaders of MUTAGEST, through its president Abissa, who was kind enough to place his trust in me modestly to lead the jury of the Committee of the Award of Excellence of the agents of GESTOCI.

You, as jurors, will certainly encounter difficulties ...

As far as the jury is concerned, the main difficulties come from the preselection stage. The line managers do not respect all the deadlines set for communicating the names of the nominees to us. The names are reaching us after several reminders. In addition, some agents are proposed to the jury without having been professionally assessed by their line manager; no evaluation available from Human Resources. So the question that arises in these cases is what was the basis on which the agent was proposed. These situations lengthen the debates within the jury and require the search for consensus since the agent is not responsible for the absence of his assessment. However, these situations have always found solutions.

Do you have any feedback on the two previous editions?

The feedback on the results presented in both editions is satisfactory.

We are at the end of our interview

I would like to sincerely say thank you to the General Manager of GESTOCI, Ibrahima Doumbia, for his willingness to take an interest in, encourage and promote any innovative idea, contributing to the well-being and development of its agents. We do not forget the president of MUTAGEST, Serge Abissa, who spares no effort for more communion and healthy competition between mutualists. I offer him the sincere congratulations of the jury for the organization of these two successful editions of the Prix d'Excellence. Long live the 2020 edition.
